Wired Magazine

Monday, January 21, 2008 - 05:25 PM

You may not have noticed the headline in panel two, but it's one of those small details that makes me chuckle.

First, a preface: I'm a "Wired" reader through-and-through. As a magazine, it appeals to all the best parts of my core nerdiness. But when I imagine the vast spectra of Wired readers, I always chuckle when I compare the real Wired headlines to the ones I imagine Wired readers would be most interested in, such as:

"Kissing: What's It Like?"

"Girls: Why Are They So Scary to Talk to in the Cafeteria at my Programming Job?"

"Robots: When Will it be Possible to Marry Them?"

I'm hardly Wired's target audience (17 year old bisexual female), but I do love that magazine, and I would very much like to read all of those articles. Your strip and commentary made me laugh today Dave, thank you for that.

I love wired, read it whenever I get a chance. I read it mostly online these days though.

this is interesting, it may take a bit getting used to posting here instead of BL!

It's really weird for me too. I find I have trouble adjusting to change...
I don't read Wired, but I do read Popular Science and let me just say that I read the classifieds in the back and consider them to be the equivalent of the funny pages.

I love Popular Science and Popular Mechanics too, and I know what you mean about the classifieds. I am also fond of Scientific American, Discover, Mother Earth News, and The New Yorker. I read a LOT of computer periodicals too, mostly pertaining to Linux and System Administration, well I used to read them a lot, the past year or so I really dropped off on all that. Most, if not all, of my reading the past 12 months has been on the internet.

I, too, love Wired magazine. However, as a gay male, I don't run into the "kissing girls" issue as often as one might think. I know, I know! It's hard to believe, but sometimes girls just want to...well...talk.

Also, having awesome references (Wired, Back to the Future) in the Sheldon comics is one of the best things about this strip. I can't wait to see what you come up with next, Dave!

I think it is interesting that I have learned the sexual orientation of at least two Sheldon readers in this forum. Are you folks looking for dates, or is it just trendy to talk about sexual preferences when commenting about a reference to a magazine in a comic strip? Honestly, I am truly curious, is this a new social phenomenon, or something that goes on all the time and I just happened to notice it today? Does liking or disliking certain periodicals make you more or less gay? Aren't gay fe/male geeks socially awkward in the beginnings of a relationship like other geeks, or does this only apply to straight geeks?

I think it's just pure coincidence that this turned up regarding this post. For myself, I just commented on the Kissing and Girls headlines, as they didn't really fit me. Nothing more, nothing less.

I just find it impressive that it's more socially acceptable to discuss it these days. 10 years ago, this kind of talk would have quickly turned a different direction.
