Followup: Where in the world are Sheldonistas?

To answer a few questions that came up.... the "Portland" in the list of Top 10 U.S. Sheldon cities was Oregon! My apologies to Portland, Maine, for getting your hopes up.

Also, we had a lot of Aussies (Oy! Oy! Oy!) write in asking for their list, so here goes: The Top 10 Australian cities for Sheldon readers...

1.) Sydney

2.) Melbourne

3.) Brisbane

4.) Perth

5.) Adelaide

6.) Canberra

7.) Cranbourne

8.) Hobart

9.) Gold Coast

10.) A small family of koalas who live by that one town with that creek that dries up a few months every year. You know the one. With the guy? Who has that blue truck? That one.

Fun fact for me: I was not aware that there was a city called "Gold Coast" in Australia! I've always associated that name with a cruddy Las Vegas casino built in the 1960's...containing the same carpets that were installed in the original construction. My apologies to the Gold Coastians in Queensland! I'm sure your Gold Coast is far, far nicer!*

Also, follow-up question: Would it be "Gold Coastians"? Is that how you say it? "Gold Coastines"? "Gold Coastinians"...?

They also have a place called Surfer's Paradise, just down the road. They're not exactly shy, are the Aussies...

Would they be Gold Coasters?

If that's the case, I'd name my town "Roller Coast". (Sweet.)

I don't think I've ever heard of a name for people from the Gold Coast.
Generally, you'd just say "I'm from the Gold Coast", or somesuch :)

(And - admit it... you just made a list of the major Australian cities, right? :-P)

They are called "East Alburnians" for reasons lost to the mists of time....

Can I just say that, if it is "Gold Coasters," that naming your town "Roller Coast" is the funniest thing I've heard today.

Also: Thanks to everyone for the Aussie fun facts!

And on the big Portland issue...

Considering there are, like, 25 Portlands on the U.S., and being from the Rose City, when I tell someone I'm from Portland and they say, "Oh? Which one?" I always reply, "Oh, you know... the really big one." ;^)

"Roller Coasters," he said. Excellent! :^D

Dave, for a time in the '90s, the Gold Coast basketball team was the Gold Coast Rollers. There was a bit of a money problem and the Australian NBL shut them down.

There be LOTS of Gold Coasts...even oddly in Nebraska... รด,0

I guess you have never been to the Gold Coast but you have described it almost exactly. Cheap, Tacky and very much a tourist trap :-)

Other fun socio-demographic facts -
Sydney - money/status and career obsessed and 2000 olympics
Melbourne - wear entirely too much black. Coffee is a way of life
Brisbane - big country town turning into a city
Perth - shops close on Sunday and there is no where to eat after 6pm
Adeliade - have a thriving church district
Canberra - In order of importance full of kangaroos public servants and politicians,
Cranbourne - never heard of it
Hobart - is cold
Gold Coast - lots of tan, dangerous beaches and even more dangerous

Interesting list. Only question I have is why you've listed Hobart as part of Australia =P

And if we're talking about Cranbourne the south-eastern suburb of Melbourne, does it really have more people reading than Hobart?!?

Yep, it was indeed higher on the list!

That's why it's fun to list out the order: It doesn't necessarily follow population size.

Seattle, for example, is the 24th largest city in the U.S., by population...yet it has the highest number of Sheldon readers in any U.S. city. A good 15% above NYC!

(That's why I'm really looking forward to going up to Seattle for Emerald City Comic-Con in May: It's gonna be a horde of Sheldonistas!)

I must admit - I didn't notice 'Cranbourne' on the list. Its just a suburb of Melbourne, for heavens sake - what is in the water down there that they are all of such good taste?!?
