Sheldonista Tom M. sent me this
YouTube link, and it absolutely blew me away. You have to listen to this Australian Lyre Bird.
As a mating tool, he mimics the sounds he hears around him. "Not so amazing," you might be saying. But...around the two-minute point in the video, you'll see just how amazing that mimickry is.
This bird is stone-cold awesome.

Wow, just wow. As I was watching the video I thought "Big Deal, bird can do bird calls" but I hung around till the 2 minute mark per your post and I'm freaking stunned. Wow.
Of course now my mean streak wants to come out and torture the bird like they used to do to the chameleon in the old Warner Bros. Cartoons, except instead of randomly changing colors behind it, play different sounds. Of course then I might accidentally cause the extinction of a species and feel really bad about that, so never mind.

Wow! Animals that mimic sounds are pretty common, of course, but all the sounds around 2:00 are really incredible! Made me sad to hear which kinds of sounds he mimics though :/.

I love how half the comments on the video are like "NO WAI!!!!" ...if you've ever had parrots (my family has 5 >.) you know EXACTLY how spot on a bird's mimicry can be. Our African Grey imitates me laughing, sneezing, answering the phone, yelling for my brother, and then dialing the phone, the oven going off, the phone ringing, the dogs barking.... basically, every small thing in life that could drive us nuts.

Eh, I thought birds usually only do that to a considerable extent if they feel lonely and have no other bird "to talk to". Though I guess some birds are also more inclined to mimic sounds than others. Parrots and Southern grackles (is that what you call it? I found like half a dozen translations for it) seem to do it a lot.
So if the sounds get on your nerves, maybe you should consider buying an additional parrot? :)

Okay, Next question. What would Arthur do if he ever saw one of these birds? Somehow this makes those old flintstone cartoons with bird playing record seem more realistic.

Flip side of this: there are stories of people lost in the bush and hear sounds of "civilisation" (such as voices, or the sounds of cars or radios) and head in that direction to find nothing...
