Gee Dave, what are you trying to do to me here??? My husband and I have been planning to be adopted by a pug in the mid-distant future, I'm tryign to figure out whether you really want the world to share in the joys of pugs or not.
Yes or no - pugs the best family dog or should I revert to my previous evil ways and track down a short-legged Jack Russell to adore instead?
Cheers from Oz.

Naaah. Go with the dog which has neither breathing problems nor does it suffer from ADD: the dachsie!

LOL... Unfotunately, with two boys, I'd have to take into consideration the squish factor - I think a dachshund would just be inviting trouble. At least a pug is in relative proportion, and a Jack would wear the kids out first. But it is something to consider :)

Nah it's no prob, my parents got their first dachshund when I was 3. No squishing involved. The stain on the carpet was the hamster, not the dog. ;)

be careful with Jack Russell Terriers and little kids. They were bred to kill/maim rats and can do a pretty good job on little kids too.

I know this well - I've previously had a Jack (died young of lymphoma unfortunately), my mother currently has a Jack. It depends on just how much the kid annoys the sleeping dog after a very very long day of noise and irritation. Speaking from experience. We're waiting until the boys are a bit older before getting a new dog in any case. :)

I would thoroughly recommend a pug.
Our little pup is ten months old and gives us so much love and affection, and she absolutely adores people, especially kids. The earlier you get kids around animals the better in my opinion.
