My favorite thing about peeps, is how they get huge when you microwave them.

Smith College has an annual Peep slaughter, or did. I don't mind them, just empty calories; marshmallow, sugar and gelatin. Marshmallow is made from corn syrup and gelatin these days instead of the older (and better) recipe which used the sap of the actual marshmallow plant. My aunt once ran short of marshmallows and so used the yellow chick peeps when makign candied yams for Easter. Truthfully, you could hardly tell the difference once cooked, but they sure amazed a small boy (me) when I watched them cooking through the glass oven door. One of my favorite Easter memories, The Day the Peeps Died.

LOL I've been very busy this spring, so I haven't made my annual pilgrimage to the Peep Research Center [peepresearch.org], but this site is STILL up and as funny as ever. I guess Peep humor never goes out of fashion. HA

Heh, that Peeps site is hilarious. Knowing that they can't be dissolved in sulphuric acid doesn't really make me want to try one. :p

This may sound terribly British, but what in the name of all that's unholy are Peeps? We don't have them on this side of the pond. Though I'm not sure if that's a bad thing...

Okay. This discussion finally induced me to sign up to talk here. Peeps are my all time FAVORITE Easter candy. They are the only thing that you can get at Easter time but not anytime else. (The other seasonal peep offerings all taste different for some reason.) They are a delicious sugary marshmallow treat that is also fun to put in the microwave to see how big they get :) I totally fail to understand how someone can dislike peeps. They ROCK!!!

My dear sweet wife likes to poke holes in the packages and eat them stale. I can't stand them, personally; however, as a joke (and I'm not making this up, these really are available) got her a bean-bag "plush" version of one of the yellow Peeps. Actually, there is another Easter - only treat. Cadbury Creme Eggs, which my elder daughter adores. How they get the "yolk" into the blasted thing without a needle I have no idea.

I watched your link at 2:30 am or so (yes I am a big nighowl) and didn't get to bed 5:30 am this morning because I clicked on the related video links where people put even crazier stuff in the microwave and NUKE the crap out of it. Check out the guys that do the "Is it a good idea to microwave this?" videos. They have like 175 different videos of them nuking different things. The coolest has to be the giant mercury vapor light bulb and the lit match.

Dont' forget Cadbury Mini Chocolate Eggs. Those are like little bits of amazingness. I could eat a pound of those puppies.

Personally, I love chocolate, but I really dislike any kind of candy that just seems to consist of sugar pressed into shape by adding yet more sugar. We have stuff like that in Germany, too. Not marshmallows though. There are little eggs, for instance, which look like they consist 100% of sugar (aside from all the artifical flavor stuff, that is) and they also taste like that. Brrrr!!

Mmmm. Dave you hit it right on the head! Cadbury Mini Eggs are the BEST Easter treat, in my opinion. I'm already working on my 5th bag this season....I usually stock up on the "after-Easter" sale so I can have some for at least a few more weeks! :)

Dave, I let the disparaging remarks against my favorite Christmas-time treat slide (Eggnog), but when you start dissing on the Peeps, well, I just had to register and voice my (mock) indignation.

What's the next all-American treat to come under the gun Dave? Hot Dogs? Apple Pie? Baseball?

Seriously though, Peeps fall squarely into the "comfort food" category for me. It's one of those items I eat, not necessarily because I truly enjoy them, but because it reminds me of my childhood (Peeps are made near to where I grew up).

I had to try and explain Peeps to my cousin in Northern Ireland last week. He has never had one of these little bundles of awesomeness. After I described them to him, I don't think he ever will. He doesn't like marshmallow!

My grandma used to give us a package in our Easter basket every year. The yellow chicks are the best closely followed by the pink bunnies. They now come in other new and unnatural colors like green and lavendar which are not as tasty. I like to bite their little heads off. When I was younger, I liked to suck their sugar coating off and then devour the marshmallow naked and unadorned (the marshmallow that is).

In the top tier of Easter treats is of course, Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs. I just got another bag last night at the supermarket's 3rd stage Easter candy display.
