Well Dave we have finally come to a disagreement on somthing. I'll give you some points on your latest strip but comon man Capt. America was never a charecter from a bygone era, nor was he ever third-tier.

Arthur's facial expression in that last panel is fabulous. Makes me think that Ant Man's wearing butt-less tights.
(How 'bout Aquaman for third-tier? Or Green Lantern, the hero who could be beaten by a man in a banana costume.)

I'm still waiting for the movie version of
The Duck [sheldoncomics.com]
or maybe
The Adventures of Stickboy" [sheldoncomics.com]
and who can forget
The Archvillian Thurg [sheldoncomics.com]?

Much as Captain America is reviled for being a super soldier and actually liking America, he is not third tier. How is Captain America from a bygone era?
Now, truth be told, I'm not a fan of him, mainly because his only power is a magic shield. Also, I doubt he'll work in live action. But still, I though Iron Man would be horrible too, and it turned out good. It all depends on how they do it.
Arrgh, I also like Doctor Strange. He is third-tier, though. And he'd need a new costume, kinda like batman going from blue underwear to ninja black armor.

Sigh. Dave was right about Ant Man.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478970/. Comes out 2010, apparently. Ant Man can also communicate with insects. That oughta give a storyline with PLENTY of depth.
Captain America has always seemed a little cheesy to me. I mean, the name is already weird, but the costume is just...ugh. I agree with doubleoseven, though. The Green Latern would be sweet.
We have the Iron Man trilogy until then.

In Response to Kamazar (#42624):
Green Lantern is DC and so ineligible for this conversation.
Marvel has already announced movies based on Thor, Captain America, Ant Man, and The Avengers, as well as Iron Man II, so looks like Dave wasn't far off.

Actually, there's already been a Captain America movie:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103923
Though I haven't seen it, I hear it's so bad that it's not worth seeing.
And as for third-tier heroes with movies, let's not forget Daredevil, Punisher, and Ghost Rider. Sure, they're guys with their own comic titles at one point (do they still have their own titles? I'm so behind on comics), but are they considered heavy hitters?
Also, BTW, I think there's a Green Lantern movie in the works...

While at ECCC, I showed this strip to my friends and fellow cartoonists Kris Straub and Brad Guigar — both of whom are far more knowledgeable about American superhero comics than I am.
They both laughlingly told me that all three characters are in various stages of film development. I cringed at the thought...but then realized that the joke still works, even if they are in development. I mean, seriously, Ant Man: The Movie? :)

Dave, are you really prescient? C'mon, admit it, you actually already knew what Marvel Studios had coming down the pipe:
http://www.superherohype.com/news/topnews.php?id=7 165
Yes, Captain America is scheduled for release in 2 years; aaaaand Ant-Man is being directed by the "Shaun of the Dead" guy! So my question is, does Thor (hitting theaters June, 2010) count as third-tier...? Je ne parle pas Marvel....

Well -- Iron man II and/or the Avengers were pretty much announced at the very end of Iron Man I where Samuel Jackson shows up at ... ohh ... you're one of the people who left the theater before the credits were over, eh? Your loss, I suppose... ;-)
