They can't let it be, but they're wrong - we don't have the right to secede at any time. Texas does have special rights that other states don't have, but secession from the union ain't one of 'em. That's one of them "tall tales" you hear tell of.

One to be a little prouder of, perhaps, might be that flag etiquette allows us to fly our state flag at the same height as the Stars and Stripes when they're flying on separate flagpoles. Other states don't get that courtesy. A bow to our former independent-nation status, I believe. I don't know if Hawaii gets the same recognition.

They do, as does the (former) California Republic.

OBTW, there is nothing in the constitution forbidding secession. The Confederate States erred in making it a shooting war at Sumter. If they had merely cut it off, and then when they got hungry, escorted the Union soldiers back to Union territory with full military honors, we'd likely be two nations today. So long as it is done properly through the state legislature, with a vote of the people affirming, there is little the US can legally do about it.

Actually that flag thing is sorta right and sorta not so much. Yes, Texas, California and Hawaii are allowed to fly their flags at the same height as the United States flag, but then, so are the other 47 States in the union.

I'm relatively new to Sheldon. I've been reading the other Halfpixel strips for a while now and decided to give Sheldon a try just a couple of weeks ago. Loving it so far!

Your strips about Texas have got me in stitches. You're spot-on about Austin. It's funny how the capital of such a conservative state can be so liberal. Just one of the many great things about our state, I guess.

I loved Thursday's cartoon. I had never been to Texas until last November/December, when I went to Austin. You're right, the stereotypical Texan is hard to find in this city. I felt like I was still in Cali, it was kind of nice, but weird at the same time.

The game doesn't work very well in Houston, either :)

It's weird, cities like Houston and Austin (maybe Dallas/Ft. Worth, haven't been in years) really buck most of the Texas stereotypes.

Austin loves their "Keep Austin Weird" slogan. Houston has become too "international" and DFW has attracted a bunch of outsiders. But drive around any other part of the state - and make sure you habla espanol - and you'll see plenty of "character".

PS I really wish there were a way to comment on individual strips rather than only blog posts. In today's strip, for instance, "a hunner dollars" is missing a T, as in "hunnert" instead :)

why don't you just start a new discussion for each one you want to talk about. Such as title: "Sheldon 5/30/2008" Or title: "hundred dollars". I'm sure it would work.

In my home town (well, in the closest city to my home town,) they have T-shirts that say, "Keep College Station Normal."

I might object to the assertion that a town of 60,000 where 85,000 people show up to the Football games and stand the whole time and sing songs is "normal," but hey. At least we're not Hippie Austinites, yes?
