Sheldon's Big Ol' Honkin' Glasses

Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 12:50 PM

Is it odd that Sheldon's asleep in his glasses?

For that matter, have we ever seen Sheldon *out* of his glasses? You'd think I'd know...but I genuinely can't recall after all these years. My strong guess is "no," but I may be wrong.

If you do know of such strip in the archives, then by all means share the link in the comments! I'm just as curious as everyone else! :)

It's not really odd. My son is 11 and sleeps in his glasses...as well as the clothes he wore that day. It would be odd if he took them off.

I've slept in mine before, and actually gotten in the shower with them on a few times. (You tend to notice rather quick that you forgot to take them off since they steam over. :)

I always just assumed Sheldon was like Scooter from the Muppet Show and that his pupils were imprinted on his glasses.

Ahem. There's a duck standing beside Sheldon's bed talking like a human being... ;)

What, this doesn't happen at your house? Man you're missing out. ;)

I wanna say I saw him once holding/cleaning them, way back when he still had a square jawline... His eyes were just closed slits at the time. I'll have to do a search 'cause that really threw me off that he was sleeping in his specs.

Um . . . all this this time I just thought he had BIG EYES; never realized they were glasses . . .

I have to say that I thought it was freaky to see him in bed like that with one lense completely burried.

I know it's specs, but they do look like eyes and seeing him all lopsided like that is very disconcerting.

(Btw the original arrived yesterday - just had to pick it up from the post office today. Thank you!)

There's this sequence, when Sheldon dressed up as Sauron for halloween 2005 [sheldoncomics.com]. Technically you don't see him without his glasses, but the mask seems a bit on the small side to fit over his b.o.h.g:s...

When I played street hockey as a kid, I always removed my glasses (of the "big honkin" kind) to put on the goalie mask. It was like the one Pelle Lindbergh wore, for Flyers fans out there... (or the one Jason wore, to any horror film fans)

Considering the amount of funds Sheldon controls and the extent of his fandom, I wouldn't be surprised if he had prescription lenses custom-made to fit into his Sauron mask's eye-holes.

Plus he probably put down the extra dough for the sturdiest and most comfortable frames available, so he wouldn't have to take them off for such things as sleeping or athletics.

I'm also probably overthinking this.

I'm sure there's a future storyline where it'll be revealed why Sheldon is wearing those big glasses. He's got gadjillions of dollars so he could have surgery if he wanted... (and if gramps would let him) Guess we'll find out in say, 2018... So that would be right after Dave reveals what happened to Sheldon's parents. My guess? They're part of an as-yet-unshown group of crash survivors on "Lost". :)

Win. The Sheldon/Lost crossover will start me watching that show again, if nothing else will.

When I was a kid and had the really sturdy flexible glasses, I would occasionally sleep with them on. Now, with the more adult glasses, I'm fairly sure that would snap them like a little twig.

Surgery won't be a good idea in a kid since it's highly unlikely that his lenses have settled yet.

I got my first specs in my early teens and still suffered a .75 diopter worsening a coupla years ago in my late twenties.

Also - I'd say that whoever does the transcription really should put "*no* specs" as a prop if it ever happens(/ed).
