ALA!

Saturday, June 28, 2008 - 09:21 PM

The ALA convention has been pretty awesome-sauce, so far, I have to admit. I'm kind of amazed at how it stacks up even with San Diego Comic-Con...in terms of Sheldonistas present. We had so, so many awesome people come by the booth (#2577, by the way!), I was kind of overwhelmed! I never would've guessed there were as many librarian readers as there are!

And a lot of librarians were excited to hear the news, today, that Sheldon books can be purchased for their branches/districts through Baker & Taylor and through Diamond Books...a new development that makes it easier for libraries to get copies. So that was fun, as well.

There was one bit of bummer news, I'm sorry to say. For the first time ever, someone stole a piece of Sheldon original art from the exhibition booth...and it has me oddly sad. It's strange, really, that among such a wonderful day, with so many kind words (and more than a few righteous high-fives distributed), that one little theft would bum me out...but c'est la vie, I suppose.

In contrast, the lads from Unshelved have been an absolute blast to exhibit with...and I have to encourage Sheldonistas who haven't checked out their strip to head on over.

More news and pics to come as the convention continues into Tuesday! And thanks again to everyone who came by! And to everyone who sent friends - and friends of friends - to come by!

Sorry to hear about the stolen art. But today's comic twanged my English nerd heartstrings.

That's why I set up all my original art like the letters from Inspector Gadget. If anyone steals it, I can just blow it up. Or, if I just feel like making its unscorched brethren more valuable, I can blow it up. Whichever.

Of course currently it's only really of value to me... Anyway, I'm sorry to hear about that. :/

That's a bummer on the stolen artwork Dave, aside from the loss of income, I'd really hate to have something I worked on so hard like that just taken.

Glad the rest was good news!

I got to meet you today at the booth and I was more star-struck than I expected to be! Such a nice guy, easy to chat with...so I couldn't help but pick up a copy of the very first Sheldon collection. Librarians love archival materials, after all.

I'm rather embarrassed about how giggly I got while you were drawing Arthur for me....but dude! My own one-of-a-kind Arthur! And he's saying my name! Dude!!

I'm glad I had a moment to show appreciation and give you a few bucks - you make my inbox a happier place every single day.

=)

BTW ladies, he's cute! ;-)

Dave,

I can't remember if you put prices out on those sketches or not. I've noticed that at trade shows like this, unless you put a sign out saying "Not Free" or the like, things disappear. It's not like the cons, where most of the booths are run by vendors. Most of the booths at ALA or BEA are run by publishers wanting to get into the good graces of librarians/booksellers. They give away a LOT of books.

It's not that people are intending to steal, it's just that the vast majority of booths are putting out freebies in stacks. Someone wandering by your booth could easily have thought that your books and sketches were free for the taking. The default seems to be "Unless it's marked display only, it's for you to take." This is particularly true of items in stacks with no price tag on them.

Don't know if that happened here or not, but it's a possibility.

Dave,

Brandon is right; the first thing that I thought when I read your sad missive was that it was probably taken by mistake. Perhaps it will walk back into your life if the attendee learns of the misunderstanding.

Dave -- post somewhere which piece of art was stolen. That way, we can all keep a lookout on ebay for it. Sorry that happened. I've had a few books stolen at comic conventions over the years and it sucks!

I'm in agreement with Jo, Brandon, et al. Librarians are honest people for the most part, and as they have to deal with the public ripping off their libraries, I'm certain that once the mistake becomes known you'll hear from the person who took the art.
If it was NOT a "mistake".... Once all of us Sheldonistas are on the lookout for the missing piece, what else can this person do but return it? Can't display it or sell it without having us report back to you.

Now thats some bad news but hey on the bright side it means that who ever it was that stole it must like the comic a whole lot.

First off, I'm sorry to hear about the stolen art. Like some other folks, I think the art was taken by someone who thought it was a 'freebie'. Personally, I always ask before I take anything, even catalogs or flyers, at a convention.

Secondly, it was really nice meeting you yesterday. Also, like others, I love my Arthur sketch and hope the photo you took of me holding the 1st SHELDON TPB comes out. Almost as cool as having my picture taken with Iron Man just before. :-)

Btw, if you don't remember me I was the older guy who said he had the same accident that Gramps did with his mustache.

See you in San Diego!

It was great to meet you, Dave! I will try to get a good photo of myself in the signed Lucky Duck shirt in case you want a promo photo :-)

Take care!
