I think you shouldn't have given him the gold medal. He should have only gotten the silver or bronze medal instead.
1. It is unclear how he got on the team in the first place.
2. He wasn't that well prepared to earn a gold medal.
3. He didn't do that great in the events he participated in.
4. If he only got a silver or bronze, it would give him something to work towards in four years at the next olympics.
