Krazy Kat

Saturday, October 11, 2008 - 11:29 PM

Sunday's strip is a little personal homage to George Herriman's early-20th-Century strip, "Krazy Kat".

A surreal and wonderful strip to check out, if you've never seen it before. Lots of linguistic twists of "Americana" mixed in with Spanish and flavors of the southwest...all set in odd, dream-like versions of the high desert.

And the simple yet endlessly mutable relationships between Krazy, Ignatz, and Offisah Pup were wonderful. Weird, but wonderful.

Putting Flaco and Arthur into that style was great fun to draw. ...I hope you enjoyed it.

That was a nice strip ) Granted, I like the way Arthur / Flaco normally look like much-o better, but the dialogue was great.

George Herriman was probably my first big influence for getting into comics. When I was a little kid my grandmother gave me a book collection from 1946 of "Krazy Kat" comics. I had no idea how old and how special this gift was, I just loved it. I must have read that book from cover to cover (including the forward by e.e. cummings) more than a hundred times.

So I had a big smile as I read today's strip. It's nice to know that Herriman's genius isn't lost on today's generation of cartoonists. And even though I didn't get to purchase the strip myself, it's good to know that there's at least one other reader out there who appreciates comic strip history.

I'm a broke college student, and I was going to buy this strip .. there's no way (as perhaps an alternative to the t-shirt idea) you'd consider making prints/posters? I really can't get over it.

And, as an aside, could this mean a possible Kelly-influenced strip/series?

This is the third time today I came back to read it again. Just wonderful!

And yes, if not a t-shirt, then a poster please!

What an awesome tribute. You totally nailed the style.

When I was a kid, I was given a huge coffee table book of the Smithsonian collection of Sunday Comics. Krazy Kat had to be one of my favorites of the whole collection. Thanks for bringing back those memories.

I definitely like the idea of a T-shirt, poster or print.

Fantastic tribute with spot on style and the character's phraseology is exactly right. This could pass for a "lost" Herriman!

I guess I'm just joining the chorus, here, but yeah, this was just wonderful! So maybe you could "copy" some others, like Little Nemo, or Bringing up Father (Bringing up Grandfather?).

I'm going to join the chorus of people saying "I clicked the 'Buy this art' link in my email immediately after reading, but was beaten to the punch."

Dave, I know you're not fond of the idea of shipping posters, but, I'd buy one. I wonder if you could set up a store on Shutterfly or Mpix or something for poster prints, that way we'd pay for the print and shipping, and you'd never personally have to deal with those annoying mailer tubes. If there is a way to set up a storefront on Mpix, that would be awesome, because then we could get them framed or on canvas or a ton of other really cool options.

I was not lucky enough to see the comic strip but I use to watch the cartoon. I love Krazy Kat and thank you for the tribute.
I was very tempted to buy this strip but I just knew that someone had beaten me to it. I vote for a t-shirt with the strip on it.

My intro to Herriman was actually in a book copy of *Archy and Mehitabal* by Don Marquis, with lovely typical Herriman illustrations. Krazy did not run in our local papers...Like a lot of books my sister came home from lit class with, I adopted it....
