Link-o-rama: "Time Enough At Last" Episode

Friday, November 07, 2008 - 01:46 PM

For those who haven't seen it, I thought I'd pass along this link to the full Time Enough At Last episode.

Also, if this is your first time watching it, post your thoughts below after you're done. I'd imagine there are more than a few non-Americans who haven't seen a Twilight Zone yet, so it'd be fun to hear your thoughts on it.

I'm sure these continue to air in Canada, as they do in the US...but did they make their way to the UK, NZ, Australia, Hong Kong?

Good call, Dave! As soon as I read "Twilight Zone," my mind immediately drifted to this episode. Well, this and the one with the psychotic ventriloquist's dummy. Scared the living crap out of me as a kid.

But "Time Enough At Last" is definitely Burgess Meredith at his finest. (Better than the Penguin even!)

Looks like you can't watch it outside of the USA? I get a "this video has expired" error when trying it from Canada.

It's on youtube too:

My favourite episode was the one where all the words and meanings get jumbled up. In the end he rushes his kid to the hospital and nobody understands him. He then starts reading this kids book so he has to start learning this new 'language'.

I'm sure he could have reconstruct the pieces in some way. Used some glue or somesuch... but that's not really the point. One should always try hard to suspend one's doubt when watching The Twilight Zone... :-p

Oh, and I really didn't like how the narrator made it seem like it's a punishment for being one of those evil little humans who only know how to build bombs and destroy themselves.

Also, I want more of that narrator! He makes things much creepier, much more bleak.

We got at least one of the black and white Twilight Zone series. However I preferred Outer Limits myself :) Of those my favourite was The Deprogrammers.

I have watched Twilight Zone, in Japanese, on Okinawa.

Time Enough was indeed a great episode. I wondered why he didn't walk to his optometry office and sort through the glasses until he found a pair that matched him, but it was Twilight Zone, after all.

My favorite episode was the one with Bill Shatner and the gremlin fooling with the airplane. I can't remember who played the gremlin, but he was great.

People pooh-pooh Bill now, but Shatner was and is a good actor.

Funny, but Twilight Zone is still as good today as it was then. Just shows that great writing counts. Here is a partial list of stars who got their big breaks on Twilight Zone. Notice that Shatner, Nimoy, and Takei did, and later all three united on Star Trek.

Burgess Meredith, Suzanne Lloyd, David Wayne, Joseph Schildkraut, Jeanette Nolan, Ross Martin, Keenan Wynn, Ida Lupino, Beverly Garland, Martin Balsam, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, Dean Stockwell, Martin Landau, Ann Jillian, Robert Duvall, William Windom, Peter Falk, Dennis Hopper, Agnes Moorehead, Elizabeth Montgomery, Charles Bronson, Jonathan Harris, Bill Mumy, Jack Klugman, Cloris Leachman, Richard Basehart, Barbara Eden, Pat Boone, Inger Stevens, John Hoyt, Russell Johnson, Lee Marvin, Donna Douglas, Kevin Hagen.

I believe Twilight Zone did make it to Australia, I seem to remember watching repeats as a lass, but I'm not 100% sure I'm not just remembering US Popculture references from sitcoms.

Ah, this is a great episode. I do love The Twilight Zone, but I still like The Outer Limits better.

In regards to a previous post, I think that even if he managed to make his way to an optometrist's, his vision is so bad he wouldn't know where he was. I mean, those glasses were like an inch thick.

Burgess Meredith in one of his three greatest roles; the guy with the glasses, The Penguin, and the old guy from Rocky. (No disrespect to Mr. Meredith.)

I remember TTZ being on the Sci-Fi channel in England about eight or nine years ago, But I didn't have the chance to watch it. Haven't seen it recently though, now I have to make do with Quantum Leap :(

Does anyone else in UK remember it, or is it my imagination?

My favorite episode also stars Burgess Meredith, as the librarian who is declared "Obsolete" by the ruling council. The spectacle of these mindless drones chanting "ob-so-LETE! ob-so-LETE!" is just scary!

I'm from Denmark, and I also had a chance to watch TTZ for a brief period of time when my local cable company decided to try out the Sci-Fi Channel.

Unfortunately Sci-Fi Channel was ditched after a month or so (stupid gits!), but it had already left its mark on me: I'd learned about TTZ and a host of other great old shows. :-D

Now TTZ has become one of my favourite shows of all time because of the great stories it tells. It's just Awesomesauce!

I also like Outer Limits very much. My favorite episode there was the one where the bee-creatures came down in a spaceship, but were in reality convicts from the bee planet.

Another old show that was truly scary at times was One Step Beyond. More of a documentary-type of show, but quite spooky at times.

Outer limits and twilight zone have both been on UK TV, memory not too sharp but the twilight zone certainly some 30 or 40 years since.

My favourite was the dodgy character arrested and slung in a cell, speaking no known language but repeatedly shouting out to the watching cameras and microphones a phrase something along the lines of "cee-en-dee-en-dee-oh!" which by the end of the episode when it was realised the chap was a soldier accidentally transported back from some distant future was recognised as being the equivalent of his 'name, rank and number' to his bizarre captors. Stirring stuff indeed.

At the time I think the BBC on the 'other side' was showing the series 'cooking in the freshly refurbished kitchen in the gardens of el Alamein' or something of that ilk.

(sigh) Poor Mr. Meredith. No one ever remembers his stirring turn as Hamlet--or his work on the Atom Bomb. They only remember him collapsing outside the ring while Mr. T beats the ever-loving crap out of Sly Stallone--a match-up, by the way, that would have played just as well in real life: the Alien vs. Predator of our childhood. What was I talking about?

Yes, we got old 60s vintage episodes of Twilight Zone on South African TV in the 90s. And still occasionally, used as time fillers on late night TV.

Don't have time to watch your episode - at work, sorry.
