If'n You Can, It'd Be Great

Friday, November 14, 2008 - 02:07 PM

My wife is helping to raise money for ovarian cancer research and treatments, and I wanted to mention it here in hopes that there are some Sheldonistas willing to donate.

Even small amounts, bundled up together from many people, can make a great impact. Thank you!

A very worthy cause. I was happy to contribute.

I'm in for $25 too, a very worthy cause. My big toe toenails are still growing back from my 5K last May for the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. I'm sure Gloria's toes will fare better. Will she take the little one? In our 5k we could take strollers, my daughter loved it. Needless to say I was walking not jogging/running!

Um. Yeah, mentioning this on the verge of Dead Space/Mirror's Edge/FALLOUT SLAGGING 3/See Link Following Message isn't really the best timing. You might want to try asking again around Feburary when I (and gamers everywhere) have money. Here's that link, where Penny Arcade sums up my point in one fell swoop. http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/10/31/ [penny-arcade.com]

Gee, what where they thinking, collecting for something as unimportant as cancer treatment when there's Wrath of the Lich King due! Honestly, no offense, but your post... seems... very inappropriate. No one's forcing anyone to donate, but let's not blame them for their "bad timing" cause there are so many more important things going on. And please don't speak for others - I am a semi-hardcore gamer myself, having played World of Warcraft since its release. I still had a few dollars left to donate, because cancer's one of the worst things that can happen to you, and it can hit anyone - your mother, your wife, your daughter, or yourself.

In Response to Shalaina (#45863):

I'm not saying it's bad timing, nor am I blaming them. Those of us that want to give something and have no money due to having spent most of it may feel slightly left out, and regret that we don't have anything to give. I'm speaking for college-age people that don't have any money to give right now. It's not only explaining why I'd want them to remind us later when we do have money, but also why we're not giving right now. And for that "no offense"... it was pretty offensive. I speak for others because, generally, a particular demographic knows itself and it's peers. All my peers are broke as hell, and they'd probably give something to cancer research or some other disease research service if they had the money. Don't assume someone making a point is being negative, just because they asked for a reminder later on.

Best of luck to Gloria. My wife just did a 5K walk in LA as part of a fundraiser for ovarian cancer - I helped her raise over $400! It was a great event.
