Happy Thanksgiving! Also..."Flank"

Thursday, November 27, 2008 - 12:13 AM

Happy Thanksgiving to the 50 states! Hope the day is a relaxing and happy one with family and friends.

Also! E-mail readers have an extra bonus laugh in Thursday's strip. I mistakenly wrote "shank" instead of "flank" (...Lord knows why, it's not like I spent time in prison dueling with cell-made knives), and the correction didn't go through to the e-mail subscribers. So, you got the extra joke: A knife made out of buffalo meat. ...I guess?

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving!

You're still okay!

Shank:
1 a: the part of the leg between the knee and the ankle in humans or the corresponding part in various other vertebrates b: leg c: a cut of beef, veal, mutton, or lamb from the upper or the lower part of the leg

Yeah. Imagine if you'd written "skank", instead. Don't go too near Italian food in the future, though. "Oso buco" would have been a lot worse. (Osso buco, BTW, is lamb shank.)

In all seriousness, buffalo is good stuff! Out here in Colorado, plenty of places offer bison in place of beef and I've never been disappointed when I've made that choice. Basically, it's a lot leaner than beef and has a little more flavor.

Give it a try sometime, Dave. You won't be disappointed!

Shank refers to the lower leg. Mmmm shanks. Most children like chicken shanks, aka the drumstick. I sure could go for a turkey shank right about now.
Thank You Wikipedia [wikipedia.org]

I do think shank is funnier. and I did get flank in my email delivery, shank nowhere to be seen. In fact, I think I will be saying shank for the next few weeks.

You know, now that I think about it, I used to get buffalo franks (not to be confused with delicious flanks and shanks) from Costco. They were probably the best tasting hot dogs I have ever had. They were skinless, so depending on which side of the argument you are on, that was a good, or potentially bad, thing. I miss those buffalo franks. All I can say is buffalo is delicious.
