Cake Wrecks

Thursday, May 28, 2009 - 07:11 PM

Sheldonista Sanna S. sent me a link to a hilarious blog, the other day, and I thought I'd share it with you. It's a blog that shares all sorts of terrible cakes made by "professionals". Or, as the blog terms it "When professional cakes go horribly, hilariously wrong."

Ladies and Gents, I present Cake Wrecks.

It's an awesome blog - the wrecks bring you to tears of sadness and Jen's commentary turns them to tears of laughter. She's also on Twitter [twitter.com].

What a coincidence to see this blog now. Two weeks ago we had my son's Eagle Scout Court of Honor. We were expecting around 80 people so we bought a full sheet cake at the local grocery store's bakery. It was to be a photo cake where the photo part was a gold BSA logo. Four of them to go in each corner.

When I picked up the cake the logos weren't gold. They were some weird shade of pinkish orange (like the food color printer ran out of yellow I guess). Then the tips to the fluer de lis on each logo (sp?) were CUT OFF. Top and bottom. To hide it the decorator had this terribly done red piping going around the top edge of the cake. It was all uneven and ugly as all get out. What made it worse was that you could still see the cut off tips in the middle of the cake. Even the congratulatory writing was terrible.

The store manager was brought in and he had attitude with me! Finally he whacked 50% off the cake and we took it to a local pro decorator. She not only fixed the problem (and vastly improved on our original vision of the cake) but she didn't charge us a DIME! My next cake will come from her store for sure.

She's at www.partytimecakes.com if anyone wants to know who rescued our cake.

In Response to Tofudisan (#48014):

Amazing, I stumbled across the cake wreck site myself a few weeks ago. If you have some time to waste, you have to check out wrecks from the past, they are amazing. One of my favorites is the "Happy Fathersalkerhood cake". Look for that blog post, it'll make more sense.

I have been following this site for a while now. It is hilarious, and sometimes really scary, what people come up with. I always like Sundays when they do the Sunday Sweets and you can see some really well done cakes. I think the "missed the mark" cakes are some of my favorite cake wrecks. I hope everyone else enjoys going through!
