In contrast, to get a picture of how I would've reacted, you'd need to imagine Daffy Duck, with his tail on fire, being chased by flying piranhas, over a series of low-rolling hills off into the horizon. Accompanying by that Three Stooges sound effect that Curly used to make: "A-whoooo-whoo-woo-woo-woo."
The video camera filming the event was obviously on a tripod until after the crash when the video cameraman picked it up to point at the crash. But given the trajectory of the car, how did the video camera not get destroyed? I gotta think that the video camera had to have been sitting on something very solid that the car probably bounced off of.
Speaking as a photographer, it's not bravery, it's getting the shot. You don't think about it. You just do.
But I think he had to know what he was doing being by that wall.
Absolutely agree. In fact, when something like that happens that might otherwise make you fall to your knees, the way a photographer comforts himself and moves on, is by putting that camera up to his eye and taking a picture. It's a reflex, and helps him not to think about what just happened.
And yes, that dude absolutely picked that wall to protect himself, and he probably expected one of those cars to do that at some point. Likely the safest place he could be.
My other half is a pro photographer and *shudder* I can picture him dong exactly that.
The shot is everything.
