Sheldonistas! Help choose a strip for posterity!
Monday, August 03, 2009 - 03:04 PM
This'll be fun:
The Ohio State Cartoon Library & Museum has asked me to donate a piece of Sheldon original art to their (huge) collection of American cartoon art.
That's cool in and of itself...but here's what I was thinking: Rather than *me* just picking a strip, let's open it up to suggestions, and see which one strip *you* think should be preserved for posterity! The strip that best represents what "Sheldon" is.
Here are the limitations:
1.) The original art must still be available in the physical archives. (You'll know it's "gone" if it says "Purchased" directly under the strip).
and...
2.) That's it. #1 was the only limitation.
So feel free to suggest your favorite strip in the comments below!

This has ALWAYS been one of my favorites, I've just always been too broke to buy it for myself. AND I'm ALWAYS surprised no one has bought this one yet. I also ALWAYS show this one to all my friends as an introduction to Sheldon already, and it seems to work pretty good. [Man, I say ALWAYS a lot, don't I?? Geesch...]
You don't have to be familiar with all the characters, or the plots, it's just a PRETTY-STINKIN'-AMAZING STRIP!!!!

I always loved the thread where Arthur & Gramps want to help Sheldon cope w/ losing his parents and bring him some happiness for Christmas.
I think these two strips really show the strip's heart:
http://www.sheldoncomics.com/archive/051215.html
http://www.sheldoncomics.com/archive/051219.html
The second one in particular concisely summarizes the strip, and yet, is still pretty funny.
In the same thread, this strip also expresses the fun geekiness of Sheldon:

Any of them would represent Sheldon well...

I also vote for 2-16-02, Ecuador - it's hilarious and it represents the spirit of Sheldon perfectly!

I second (third?) the nomination for the "Purchase of Ecuador" [sheldoncomics.com] strip.
However, I'd nominate the "Drawing Hope" [sheldoncomics.com] strip. Sheldon doesn't appear on this strip, though.
I'll keep thinking; there's gotta be a more "Sheldonistic" strip in the archives.

Wait, wait, wait! As much as I love the "Hope" strip, I've stumbled across two strips.
I like this one [sheldoncomics.com] (and Sheldon appears in it).
But, really. Nerdiness, dinosaurs and feathers come together in this strip [sheldoncomics.com].
Hands down, the most "Sheldonic" strip around.

This is a good one 6-15-08; great subject for the museum, great art, and a classic punchline at the end.

Okay, I had to create an account to comment on this one. I can't believe no one's bought this already: 11/02/08 [sheldoncomics.com]
It is one of my all-time favorites, and I think it represents the strip perfectly. I would have bought it myself if I weren't a poor student. :)
Here are two other favorites:

I think this is a great example of the whimsy and non-sequitur mind of Sheldon and Arthur. I think it captures what it's like to be a kid.

How about http://www.sheldoncomics.com/archive/061116.html? Not only does it included three of your most beloved characters, but it includes a discussion about two other well known and iconic cartoon characters. The irony of the discussion itself would be an excellent lead-in for the museum to give a synopsis of your characters and their development throughout the strip's history (assuming that they are planning to devote an entire exhibit to Sheldon - which of course that should!). Congrats on the honour.

Of course, Peru isn't as funny as Ecuador...
Although, I did notice that the museum is on the OSU campus. Perhaps a strip from 4 Foodgroups with a witty ND reference would be appropriate?

gotta go with T [sheldoncomics.com], if only for the disparity between T's mournful pity, and Arthur's joy about the pity.
