I adore this song... wikipedia has the story of how this song was used by an Oklahoma City promoter in 1953 as a fundraiser to procure a hippopotamus for Gayla Peevey, the young girl singing the song, who was from the area. They raised $3000 and purchased a baby hippo, Matilda. Gayla donated the hippo to the zoo, which had no hippo at the time.

I found this song on an old Dr. Demento Christmas album when i was about 12. I have been singing it and receiving hippo paraphenalia ever since. My mom once thought I was too old for it, but I just started singing louder.
