Tip for the day: Peel from the "Bottom"

Monday, February 22, 2010 - 10:45 PM

A few dozen of you e-mailed and tweeted me, today, to share this patented "Amazing Banana Secret"*...which I hadn't heard before:

Apparently, apes, gorillas and monkeys peel bananas from the bottom-up, not from the stem-down...as it takes care of the the string cheese problem aaaand the weird GI-tract nub in one fell swoop.

Thank you all for sharin' that! I been doin' it wrong all these years.

*PS: If I may quote from Dave Barry, doesn't "Amazing Banana Secret" sound like a punk-rock band name?

It all depends on how you look at it. If you look at any photograph of bananas growing in a bunch (or in a "hand") you will see that Bananas grow "upside down" with the stem pointing toward the trunk of the vine, or tree. When you peel a Banana from the nub in a string cheese avoidance action, you are actually peeling it from the top down.

I was going to post the same thing as rodneyelin. But I don't think I was going to be as nice. We eat bananas upside down. It is the Apes and Monkey's that eat them the way they grow on the tree.

kinda random, but:

a speaker once told a story that when he was young he wouldn't eat bananas because his older brother told him that bananas were really dead moldy amazon spiders...

they would die and their long legs would just hang down and then they would begin to mold and so on... the little black spots in the middle of the banana are the legs..

he told it better than I can lol
