Ok, well I have to pipe in here. The Golden Gophers are a pretty good Minnesota Mascot. Farther up in the frozen north, my High school mascot was the Moorhead Spuds (yes, a potato--it was usually orange and black--the school colors).
http://www.zootpatrol.com/index.php/2010/08/some-p retty-great-high-school-mascots/spuds/

Also in Moorhead, MN: Concordia College, home to the Cobbers (usually represented by a cob of corn).

What can we say, nothing much going on up there besides growing food in the summer and keeping warm in the winter.

My high school was Seaholm High School in Birmingham, MI. Our team name was the "maples." As in the tree. Our mascot was "the mighty maple" which was someone in a maple leaf costume. It was bad.

I may be slightly biased, as a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket (which is pretty awesome, especially because the reason we're the Yellow Jackets is that our fans went to root AGAINST our rivals before we had a football team, and we wore yellow suit jackets to identify ourselves), but the University of Georgia (UGA) has the worst mascot. Not that the Bulldog itself is a bad idea, but the name of their mascot is the worst. The name of the official bulldog? Uga. As in, you pronounce it "ugh-uh". ALSO, the school is in Athens, GA, but the dog itself lives in a mansion in Savannah, GA, about 5 hours away. Just silly.

I'm an alum of Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. Our team nickname was The Diplomats.

So we were affectionately (I suppose) known as "The Dips."

Being in Lancaster, PA, I was one of those who wanted to officially change the team name to "Fighing Amish." Sadly it hasn't happened as of yet.

My high school was also the Greenwave, which came about from the announcer describing the team entering the field in their green uniforms.

However, it's an upgrade from what they were before the switch--the Pine Cones. Our town was famous for its pine trees.

Oh, and my undergrad college's mascot was the Presbyterian College Blue Hose. Nobody knows what the heck that is. The mascot on the field is a Scottish warrior, a la Braveheart, due to Presbyterianism's Scottish roots. I guess it's no worse than the Red Sox or White Sox.

My boyfriend's alma mater and my younger brother's current university?

The Loggers.

It wouldn't be so odd if it weren't smack-dab in the middle of the tree-hugging Pacific Northwest.

OK: High School: The Carle Place High (formerly know as Frog Hollow, New York) Frogs. Croak. It was even on the class ring complete with its own little marshy environment. I can't discuss the dancing frog mascot without breaking out, so I'll stop there.

How about the Senators? There was a high school in my town with that team name, and I know there are several others out there with this one. I suppose it's a better name than the Representatives.

On the other hand, I live next to the University of Washington in Seattle, where the Huskies (nice doggy) played the Huskers a couple weeks ago. And perhaps you could say that the Huskies were more like Huskees (as in they got husked). Lost 21 to 56.

In Utah there's a school with the mascot "Beat Diggers." I'm only assuming they are a very terrifying group. Also, Witchita State University is the Shockers. No, not like electricity. Like a shock of wheat.

I ended up going to California State University Northridge, which has as their mascot The Matador! Yay! Let's cheer on a guy in a frilly outfit and a silly hat that that sticks swords in bulls and dances around a ring with a red cape! That's supposed to get me pumped for football season?

I think that the worst team names out there goes to Tarpon Springs High School in Florida....They are the "Sponges."

Not my high school, but drove by it once while I was on vacation and never forgot its tragedy.

OOO! I almost forgot! I was on the swim team in high school and although our school's mascot was Sammy The Centurion (a Tommy the Trojan rip-off, but still acceptable), our swim team had a different name, for some unknown reason. We were... The Pollywogs. There. Now you know my secret shame.:)

My high school's mascot was the Minutemen. Since our uniforms matched those of the New England Patriots at that time, even down to the decals on the helmets, the players could never figure out why they chose "Minutemen" over "Patriots". (It was a new school.) The name itself wasn't all that bad but it threw a wrench into some old classics. "Give me an M! Give me an I! Give me an N! Give me a... aw, forget it."

We can't forget The Ohio State University - Buckeyes- the Buckeye is a tree so their mascot is a dancing seed with arms and legs.

You can only imagine the terror that would seize your heart when faced with...the Rose-Hulman fighting Engineers! Represented not by a random student from the stands (though that would have been really funny) but by an elephant. You would probably not be surprised to hear that we didn't win a lot of football games.

It did spark a funny conversation with one of my brothers though, wherein he asked - in all seriousness - what the games were like, if they were really different, and if we used pulleys or something. I think he was a little disappointed to learn that no, it was just regular football played badly.

Ok, I think that our high school here in Canada had the worst mascot.

The Dominoes.

Seriously. Hit one of us and we all fall down. Group fail, if you ask me.

It was obviously so bad they changed it to The Coyotes now.

Our high school mascot was pretty general and not bad (the Cougars), but a couple of the teams we played against were pretty bad. The Scotty Dogs for one. The Shockers sounded pretty intimidating until you added in the fact that it referred to a "shock" of wheat.

I always wondered why University of Oklahoma's mascot was the "Sooner", but I never tried wiki-fu on it until now. Apparently, a "sooner" refers to a settler who tried to claim land in a certain area of what is now Oklahoma before President Grover Cleveland declared it open to settlement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sooners [wikipedia.org]

My high school was the Canon McMillan Big Macs. Our mascot wore a kilt and had bagpipes. It only got cool after Braveheart came out and our mascot replaced his bagpipes with a sword.

My college mascot was the D&E Senators (because the school was founded by two wealthy West Virginia senators) so the mascot ended up being an old guy in a big hat with a cane and chaps.
