My version of this is:

If wishes were horses, beggars would eat well.

If wishes were horses, we'd be drowning in horse pucky! And like the Rubber Bandits, we'd all have a "Horse Outside".

A return to a classic! I well remember the first iteration of poor Arthur trying to figure out the meaning of this old saw. Replying to tudza above, the character Jayne from the erstwhile TV series "Firefly" once says: "If wishes were horses we'd all be eating steak."

Grandpa always said this about dreams but it applies to wishes just as well:

"If you're gonna dream, dream big, it don't cost any extra."

Also, about the word IF: "IF frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their butts on the ground so often"

-and; "IF the dog hadn't stopped to s***, he'd-a caught the rabbit."
