A few keen-eyed readers noticed that Arthur has now been struggling with this proverb for
FIVE YEARS.

I think the beggar looks a little bit like Fernando.

That was the strip I first read all those years ago.
After emailing you, you kindly sent me a sketch of Arthur.
Even after all these years, your strip continues to make me smile - Cheers :)

Typo here: "than" in the first panel should be "then".
It is one of the more puzzling idioms in the English language.

I concur with the poster above. The good thing about that error (weak sauce) is that it drove me to sign up in order to post to inform you of it. However, I am now SIGNED UP after 5 plus years of reading (awesome sauce)!
Have the two ever combined? Will this bring about utopian harmony or dystopian chaos? Or would it just result in mediocrity au jus?
Now, that would be an interesting strip!

I also both noticed the "than"/"then" problem and immediately remembered the previous strip about beggars & horses.
Great minds something something.

Ha! It made me sign up too, after a considerable time as a daily reader. Maybe such errors are not all bad?

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.
Translation: Everybody wishes. Wishin' don't get you nuthin'. All the wishing in the world isn't going to get you what you want or raise your station in life.
Horse riding was a sign of good breeding and higher station back when livestock was a sign of wealth and hunting foxes was P.C. :P
