Kale

Friday, January 28, 2011 - 12:01 AM

Today's Kale Haiku:

Kale, you nasty. Guhhh.
Somehow, your PR is good.
But you nasty, Kale.

Feel free to top that haiku with one of your own, below. Let's see who can best summarize this beloved land-coral.

In Kale they seem to abound
Yet Kale is not good

Kale is that cabbage stuff right?

Put baby kale in skillet with small amount of oil, garlic, and oyster sauce. Cook until tender.
Learned that recipe in Malaysia where it's a staple. Makes it very tolerable.

Stepchild of cabbage —
Dark green-leaved, heartbitter. Kale.
Rhymes with fail? 'Bout right.

This is the only from of Kale I've been able to actually eat. I made it for everyone at Thanksgiving, and it was gone in a flash. Thanks Aarti!

Not hale and hearty,
This vegetable misled me.
I'm kale and farty.

Requires the american pronunciation of vegetable (VEJ-tuh-bull) and imposes a decidedly occidental rhyme scheme upon a form that requires none. Oh, and it's rude. Sorry.

Sorry, we all love kale around here. My young nieces scream (yes, scream) in excitement when I tell them we're having kale for dinner, and they shower me with hugs and declarations that I'm THE BEST.

And don't get me started on kale chips, which are "blink and they're gone" when they niecelings are around.

We usually eat kale with chorizo and tomatoes. The trick is to add VERY LITTLE water. You don't want it turning limp and soggy!

No Haiku, jus' some general observations.

I have some kale growing in my backyard, which I've been eating as medicine, not for pleasure. Someone told me to let it sit in the yard and pick it after the first frost or snowfall (it's such a hearty plant that it does not all die in cold weather.) Lo and behold, the flavor was much improved. It also tastes better when it's cooked with red onions.

I would like to get the recipe for those kale chips.

'til I was twenty-five, but
Kale makes rockin' soup.

I never know what else to do with it, but I love kale in soup. Make some chicken soup, toss in some coarsely chopped kale, and you have a happy Shrewd.

Eggnog, however... that I'll agree with you on. Blargh.
