In desperation I found the sure-fire cure for Cheese Cat towels (aside from buying new towels)

Prewash or soak said cheesy (or potentially cheesy) towels with about a cup or two of white vinegar (it's cheap and environmentally friendly!). Then wash as usual. Cheese-B-Gone!
