This happens to me at convenience stores when buying a huge cup of coffee to get me home when on the road.
Convenience store coffee, when hot, is so hot that it almost melts my "US Army Airborne - Death From Above" plastic travel mug. Ergo, it needs ice, but the ice comes out of convenience store drink machines either one cube every 2 minutes, or 5 pounds all at once.
So I go between adding ice and letting it melt then adding more of the molten-lava coffee, back and forth until I finally get it hot enough to stay warm until finished - but not to the point my lip runs away, screaming, when I take a sip.
It can take up to 15 minutes to get it right.
