SOPA/PIPA

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 - 01:47 AM

Two seconds of soap-boxin':

1.) Perhaps take a few moments to learn about how SOPA and PIPA work. Here is a good start.

2.) Print and mail letters to your state’s senators and representatives, urging them not to support this. Physical mail is harder to ignore than email. It piles up. It has to be put into those 1930's-looking satchels labelled "MAIL". You can find representatives’ addresses here and senators’ addresses here.

3.) Call your senators and representatives on the phone and urge them not to support the bills. See above links for phone numbers or click here to get a quick list of representatives based on where you live.

Thank you, Dave. I'll be writing those letters this morning.

I did a year of a letter-writing campaign on behalf of Star Trek: Enterprise, hitting advertisers regularly, and they really do respond to paper letters. Signatures on an e-petition are nice, but phone calls get the politicians' attention, and letters do seriously pile up and frighten the mail room.

Do it now before stamps go up again. ;)

Oh my GOSH.....honestly, this puts my faith in the government at an all time low (which, given where it was already, puts it pretty far into negative numbers at this point).

They'll be hearing from me as well as anyone else I can get to do something about this. If they actually think this is a good idea, they're nuts.

Dave, I cropped the top portion of today's comic and uploaded it as my Facebook profile pic. Didn't think you'd mind.

I sure hope FB doesn't get blacklisted for that.

I emailed my senator (Al Franken) about this last month and got a reply about how great and wonderful PIPA is. I don't think he was listening to what I said.

For those wishing to write their Congressperson or Senator, please note that it takes an ADDITIONAL two weeks for any snail mail to be routed to the appropriate office when it is received by the House and/or Senate.

Further, offices receive so many e-mails there can be a week plus delay before they are read in many circumstances.

So for any votes that are up and coming, the best way to get your voice heard is to call. Continue to call. Ask everyone you know to call.

Hopefully these bills will disappear shortly.

Those of us outside the USA are in a particularly invidious situation since we don't vote in the US but are often affected by US government actions like this one. I don't know any lobbyists in Washington but I would certainly contact one if I did.

You know... this would be a great excuse to do another Webcomics Weekly. I would love to hear what each of your fully formed stances on this are as well as understanding the bill as an aspiring cartoonist. Also because I hunger to hear you guys talk in my ears as I go to bed each night.
