This reminds me very much of the awesome TED talk on the fluidity of language and pointlessness of lexicographical snobbery (by none other than a lexicographer):

For what it's worth, when I took a typing class the rule was one space after a comma/semi-colon/etc. and two spaces after the punctuation at the end of a sentence (period, exclamation mark, etc.)
